Very much a man of Lincoln, "Billy" (the nickname apparantly derives from his father's name and not the contemporary comic character) played virtually all his senior football for City, the exception being a few appearances for Nottingham Forest as a guest in WW2.

He signed as an amateur from crack local side Corinthians and made his debut at outside-left at Chester in April 1935 but was to establkish himself as a wing-half by 1938-39, switching to left-back after the war when he became a regular penalty taker.

He also played 208 wartime games for the Imps and had a reputation as being one of the Northern Section's finest backs - consistent and resolute in the tackle.

A draghtsman by trade, he continued to live in Lincoln and was employed by Robeys for many years.

Profile taken from "Who's Who of Lincoln City 1892-1994" by Donald & Ian Nannestad. Published by Yore Publications, ISBN 1 874427 90 9.
